Rand Ballard of MedAssets to Lead Meals On Wheels Association of America Foundation

Atlanta, GA

Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) announced today that Rand Ballard, Chief Operating Officer of MedAssets, Inc., has been elected to serve as the Chairman of the MOWAA Foundation (MOWAAF) Board.  In this role, Mr. Ballard will supervise all of the business and developmental functions of the MOWAAF. Additionally, he will ensure that all of the orders and resolutions of the Board of Directors are implemented and will play a pivotal role in managing the activities of the Foundation.

The mission of the MOWAAF is to help MOWAA eradicate hunger and malnutrition among America’s seniors and others in need. The Foundation’s goals are to increase public awareness, research, education, fundraising and community involvement in addressing this issue. The Foundation’s key initiatives include March for Meals, a national public awareness campaign to stop senior hunger, and the development of the National Center for Nutrition Leadership, a training center for all research and education efforts to fight hunger and malnutrition.

Newly elected Foundation Chairman, Rand Ballard, serves as Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Customer Officer for MedAssets, Inc.  Mr. Ballard earned an MBA from Pacific Lutheran University with a triple major in finance, operations, and marketing. He was a deans' list undergraduate at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and holds a Bachelor of Science degree with concentration in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, and business law. In addition to his position at MedAssets and the MOWAAF, Mr. Ballard serves as Chairman Elect of Healthcare Industry Group Purchasing Association (HIGPA), and is Vice President of Health Careers Foundation, a non-profit organization providing scholarships and low interest loans to non-traditional students pursuing a degree in the healthcare field.

Hunger and malnutrition in the United States is a growing problem. Malnutrition is directly linked to a reduction of quality of life measures for senior citizens.  In fact, a weight loss of more than 10 percent in the elderly increases the likelihood of institutionalization by 1.7 times and increases the morbidity rate by three times.   For many seniors, the meal provided by senior nutrition programs is their exclusive source of nutrition.  With the 65 and older population projected to grow 3.5 times that of the nation as a whole, the demand for home-based meal services is expected to double in the next 10 years placing additional financial challenges on the programs and mandating innovation in the utilization of existing resources.
